Why do Subaru Owners Keep Their Vehicles Longer?

Subaru Forester and Outback owners are more likely to keep their vehicles fifteen years or longer according to a new study from iSeeCars.  The Subaru Forester was fourth and the Subaru Outback was tenth on the list for longest-kept SUVs.  If you’re looking for reliability, Consumer Reports lists Forester and Outback as the number two and three most reliable Subaru models. Forester owners list reliability, safety, affordability, standard all-wheel drive, and impressive fuel economy as the main reasons for why they hang on to their vehicles for so long - 12.8% of Subaru Forester owners keep their vehicle for 15 years or longer. Outback owners like the utility cargo space like an SUV but with a car-like ride.

Subarus Have Good Fuel Economy

According to Auto Trader, the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid all-wheel drive vehicles in North America include 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, Impreza, and Legacy models.  The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek gets an EPA estimated 27 city/33 highway miles per gallon and 30 combined.  The Subaru Legacy is close with 27 city/35 highway miles per gallon and 30 combined. And the 2020 Impreza gets the best gas mileage at 28/36 city/highway and 31 combined. Fewer stops at the gas pump means more money in your pocket!

Subarus are Reliable

If you’re looking for a vehicle that requires minimal repairs and maintenance, then Subaru is the vehicle for you.  The major components including the engine, transmission, four-wheel drive, and differentials are reliable.  If you maintain your vehicle well, you can get 300,000 miles out of it with minimal maintenance costs.  Consumer Reports gave the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, Impreza, and BRZ perfect reliability scores.  Subaru shows continual improvement based on more recent surveys and reports showing that newer models are more reliable and have fewer issues than the older models.

Subarus are known for their Safety Features

Subaru vehicles have a number of safety features that led to being named an IIHS Top Safety Pick and #1 in vehicle safety according to ACSI.
  • EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology: Provides extra protection by alerting you if you veer outside of your lane, optimizing cruise control, and monitoring traffic movement.  In IIHS front crash prevention tests, all Subaru models with EyeSight receive the highest possible scores.
  • SUBARU STARLINK™ Safety and Security Connected Services:  This includes Automatic Collision Notification, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Recovery, Remote Services as well as keeping you connected to all multimedia content.  For your convenience, this feature can be accessed from the driver’s seat, your computer or on your mobile device.
  • Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist:  This system warns you of any vehicle or hazard in your blind spot and will alert you so that you’re only passing other vehicles when it’s safe.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Sends a warning if vehicles are approaching from the side, which is particularly helpful when backing out of your driveway or into a tight parking spot.
  • Rear Vision Camera: This detects potential hazards that would not be detectable when relying on your side or rearview mirrors.
  • Protective Systems: A reinforcement frame helps provide high-impact protection for passengers. There are also eight strategically placed airbags.  To protect the passenger area, the engine’s placement is low. Finally, for added protection, there is an advanced rollover sensor in Subaru Forester, Outback and Crosstrek models.
  • Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive: Standard in most models and provides greater traction in slippery conditions.

Subarus are Affordable

Most Subaru vehicles come standard with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, yet still have a low sticker price. For example, the base 2020 Nissan Altima S with AWD starts at $25,450. The 2020 Subaru Legacy also comes standard with all-wheel-drive, but is far less expensive, starting at $22,745. Upgrading to the Legacy Premium trim ($24,995) is still less than the base level Altima!

Subarus have Standard All-Wheel Drive

Almost every Subaru comes standard with All-Wheel Drive, which provides better stability, efficiency, and increased safety in slippery road conditions.  You get a better grip on the road when power is distributed to the wheels.  This is especially important in low traction conditions like snow and rain.  All-Wheel drive enhances control and stability, so you can feel confident driving in sloppy weather conditions.
