Sport compacts are versatile and sporty cars that can really do it all. The sporty design and compact body styles make handling easy and driving fun, while the hatchbacks can allow for greater trunk space and cargo room. Plus, sport compacts are typically stylish and can feel like a sports car while offering more legroom and cargo space. Offering both superior performance and a level of everyday functionality, sport compacts provide both great design and practicality. The Subaru WRX and the VW Golf R are two sport hatchbacks that have a lot to offer buyers in terms of price, performance, and style.

Performance

When it comes to performance, sport compacts can be great cars. The smaller, sportier bodies are great for handling and they come in a variety of engine sizes and types that can be quite powerful. The Subaru WRX is a leader in its class, consistently quicker and more high-powered than other sport compacts. Additionally, the Subaru's excellent steering, responsive handling, and powerful braking system help create an all-around commanding ride. The standard All-Wheel Drive that Subaru offers allows the WRX to perform above and beyond other competitors in its class. The Golf R simply can't compete with other Golfs, such as the GTI, when it comes to power and performance, and it can't hold up to the WRX in this area either.

Safety

Subaru is known for its excellent safety options. The Subaru EyeSight driver assistance technology offers many different safety features. Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning are just some of the key features of this optional feature. On the other hand, the Golf R offers many of the same features as well. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has chosen the WRX as a Top Safety Pick but has not yet evaluated the Golf R.

Design

Sports compacts are just that: sporty versions of smaller cars that are fun to drive. The hatchback can allow for more cargo space than a traditional trunk and the smaller body style is more convenient, especially for small families and city driving. Both the WRX and the Golf R have compact bodies that allow for better handling, but the Golf R rides lower to the ground and is significantly shorter than the WRX. The Golf R has a new 40-color palette to choose from. Both the WRX and the Golf R offer standard infotainment systems which include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although the Golf has a slightly larger screen at 8 inches wide as opposed to Subaru's 6.5 inches. The WRX has a better overall ergonomic interior design and feels significantly roomier than the Golf R, which has a somewhat cramped backseat, not ideal for hauling passengers around. Additionally, the WRX has comfortable seats and also contains fewer blind spots, allowing for more visibility. The WRX offers ample cargo space and folding 60/40 seats, so there is plenty of room for transporting almost anything.
