What are the Features of the 2023 Subaru Solterra?

Its name comes from the Latin words for "sun" and "earth," but the 2023 Solterra is Subaru's most technologically advanced vehicle yet. The Solterra is built on Subaru's first-ever all-electric architecture, the e-Subaru Global Platform, and is the first AWD electric vehicle to feature standard symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The 2023 Subaru Solterra is an electric vehicle (EV) packed with exciting Subaru features including 8.3 inches of ground clearance, state-of-the-art active safety, available 12.3-inch touchscreen, and Subaru reliability in an all-electric zero-emissions SUV.

What are Some Similar Electric Vehicles in the Same Class with the Subaru Solterra?

Given the growing demand for electric vehicles in recent years, the 2023 Subaru Solterra is entering a market that already has a few all-electric crossover SUV's.  Some of the top competitors include the Volkswagen ID.4, Ford's Mustang Mach-E, the Tesla Model Y, and Hyndai's Ioniq 5. The ID.4 has a similar sleek look to the Solterra, with clean lines and aerodynamic elements.  The Tesla Model Y features all-wheel drive, plenty of cargo room, and is packed with safety features, like the 2023 Solterra.  The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Subaru Solterra have been sized up against each other by auto critics recently, highlighting their similarities as all-electric crossover SUVs with a few key differences.

What are Similarities Between the Subaru Solterra and the Hyundai Ioniq?

Both the Solterra and Ioniq were born out of partnerships between pairs of automakers.  The e-Subaru Global Platform, a dedicated electric vehicle platform used in the Solterra, was developed in partnership with Toyota.  Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 also share a platform and have the same electric vehicle resources. The Subaru Solterra and Ioniq both have four grades of regenerative braking controlled by paddle shifters, as well as three drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Eco.  Both electric SUVs also have 60/40 folding rear seats, however the Solterra has slightly more cargo room with 30 cubic feet, as opposed to 27.2 in the Ioniq. The Ioniq and Solterra are equipped with modern safety features including active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams.  However, the Solterra adds adaptive cruise control as a standard feature.

What are the Main Differences Between the Two Electric Vehicles?

The Solterra and Ioniq come with different battery power configurations.  The Ioniq 5 has a 77.4-kwh battery pack that can be fitted with either a 225-hp single motor and rear-wheel drive, or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version that achieves 320-hp and 446 lb-ft of torque.  Hyundai plans on releasing a smaller 58-kwh battery pack for the Ioniq 5 later this year.  The Solterra has a 72.8-kwh battery pack and a standard dual-motor all-wheel drive system that gets 218-hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. In general, the Ioniq 5 is quicker on the roads, but the Subaru Solterra has the extra ground clearance and sturdy AWD system to push the limits of how far you can take an electric vehicle off-road.

How Long Does it Take to Charge a Subaru Solterra?

The Subaru Solterra has a built-in fast-charge capability of 100kw/hr, making it possible to get an 80% charge of the all-electric vehicle in under an hour from a Level 3 DC fast charger.  It has a range of 228 miles from a full charge, and has an EPA efficiency rating of 3.1 miles per kwh.  AWD versions of the Ioniq 5 can power up to 80% in 18 minutes, using DC fast-charging at up to 240 kw.  Hyundia's Ioniq 5 can go for a 256-mile range and has an EPA efficiency rating of 3.3 miles per kwh.
