Summer brings plenty of sunshine and heat, which can be hazardous to your Subaru tires if not addressed properly. Excessive exposure to heat, if not dealt with correctly, can cause tire pressure fluctuations, ruin your rubber, or even cause a blowout. That’s why Rafferty Subaru has compiled this guide to prepping your tires for the summer heat and how you can prevent issues.
Tire Pressure Changes
The air inside your tires responds to changes in external temperature by increasing or decreasing pressure. When they get hot, air molecules expand; therefore, your tires can overinflate in hot weather. Make sure you check your tire pressure regularly while they’re cool and keep them inflated at the recommended amount. Otherwise, your ride quality will decrease and your tires are more easily punctured.
Damaged Rubber
Summer heat can cause lasting damage to the rubber in your Subaru tires and make them unsafe to drive. Rubber resists melting in the heat, but high temperatures will soften the rubber and therefore make it more susceptible to damage. Anything it drives over, from rocks to glass to potholes, can put you at an increased risk for tire failure.
Increased Blowout Risk
In severe circumstances, heat can cause excessive flexing in your tire and increase its friction against the asphalt. This will happen if your tires are overinflated because of the heat, or if you haven’t inflated them enough and there’s more contact with the road surface. Leave a tire in this condition and it’s more likely to blowout completely.
