Does Subaru have an Electric Car?

Subaru recently announced the Subaru Solterra, the brand’s rugged answer for the next generation of electric vehicles. Named after the Latin words for “sun” and “earth,” this SUV’s green technology will complement Subaru’s core values and capabilities with the new all-electric vehicle architecture platform, the e-Subaru Global Platform. Known for their reliability, state-of-the-art safety technology and all-wheel drive, Subaru has perfected their natural evolution, with an all-electric SUV designed for all-weather and road performance.

What Features will the Subaru Solterra have?

The Subaru Solterra will be engineered with Subaru’s commitment to safety and designed to be fun to drive, all-weather capable, and with a low center of gravity to tackle adventures off the beaten path. Drivers will be able to take their all-electric Subaru Solterra for a mountain drive knowing the deep snow and mud will be no match for the Solterra’s dual-function X-Mode, extra ground clearance, and all-wheel drive. Escape civilization, explore the outdoors, and tackle steep trails with this electric vehicle’s improved performance capabilities, like more driver engagement with steering wheel paddle shifters and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) for more miles between stops. As Subaru’s first electric SUV, the Solterra will come with a front-wheel-drive model suited for urban commuting.

With the Solterra, driver and passenger safety comes standard in a green and energy-efficient package. Drive at ease in your all-electric vehicle with the protection of Subaru’s award-winning safety features. The Subaru Solterra is engineered for crash prevention and will likely receive high scores in crash test ratings, just like its sister vehicles.

What will the Subaru Solterra look like?

The brand new look of the Subaru Solterra will likely be unveiled at the 2021 New York International Auto Show in late August. But going green doesn’t have to mean downsizing; early buzz claims its size and capacity will be similar to the 2021 Subaru Forester. Several concept designs of the 2023 Subaru Solterra have been produced showing a sleek and modern take on the Subaru SUV. One thing is certain - the Subaru Solterra will still have the distinct rugged design Subaru drivers have come to love and associate with the brand.

How Far Can an Electric Car Go on One Charge?

According to JD Power, the distance an electric vehicle can travel with one charging session depends on the type of charge. DC charging is quicker and more efficient than AC charging but AC is the most readily available source for electric charging. An AC charge can be applied from the common household plug and an overnight 10-hour charge will provide a range of about 20-50 miles. A DC charge from a plug similar to a clothes dryer and an overnight 8-hour charge will yield a range of 200+ miles.

The new Subaru Solterra could potentially be one of the first all-electric vehicles to use a solid-state battery pack. With this new technology, electric vehicle ranges would be 2-10 times longer than with a lithium-ion battery. Be sure to check in with Rafferty Subaru for updates on this new technology!

How do you Calculate Gas Mileage for an Electric Car like the Subaru Solterra?

When calculating the mileage of an internal combustion engine, we divide how many miles traveled by how many gallons were used. Similarly for all-electric engines like the Subaru Solterra, we look at kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 miles) and divide the number of kilowatts used from the charged battery to drive 100 miles.

Just like a gasoline car’s MPG rating, all-electric cars have an MPGe rating or “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent” rating established by the EPA for city and highway driving. This will help calculate a good estimate of the annual cost to drive an all-electric vehicle if you know how much your frequent charging station charges for electricity.

Example:
  • An all-electric vehicle with 136 MPGe would use about 25 kWh to drive 100 miles. If the cost of 1 kWh is $0.14, then driving 100 miles would cost 25 * $0.14 = $3.50
  • And if we compare with a non-electric vehicle: A gasoline car that gets 25 MPG and assuming $3.00/gallon, to drive 100 miles it would cost (100/25) * $3.00 = $12.00
