It's That Time, Spring Car Check-Up

The weather is finally warming on the East Coast, and we’ve been treated to some spectacular sunny weekend weather.  We may be restless.  After all, we’ve been cooped up inside all winter long.  Naturally, we may decide to take a day-trip to a state park to allow us to run around with (or without) our furry kids.  Before we take our Subaru on our joyride through nature, it is important to give our favorite auto some much-needed attention.

Remember the big snow and ice storm in March? Our Forester safety features proved their value!  Safety features need testing and maintenance though, so to be prepared for our next spring jaunt, we’ve outlined a checklist of Rafferty’s  Subaru maintenance suggestions.  Follow these, and that weekend trip will be fun, safe, and free of car trouble!

  1. Change your oil and oil filter. The frequency of oil changes depends upon the type of oil you use and the number of miles the Subaru was driven.  However, Subaru recommends changing the oil and oil filter at designated intervals to keep the engine running trouble free. Neglecting to replace engine oil can result in poor engine performance, higher fuel consumption and even severe engine damage.

  2. Check your fluids. At the time of each scheduled oil change, a best practice is to also check other engine fluids. These fluids include power steering, brake, transmission, windshield washer fluids and coolants. If the levels are low, top them up, and flush/replace them as recommended in the owner’s manual. Keep in mind that the power steering, brake and coolant systems are closed, so low fluid levels may indicate a leak.

  3. Replace your wiper blades. Snow and freezing rain can wear down windshield wipers.  Torn or cracked wiper blades won’t do much good in the middle of unrelenting spring showers when visibility is reduced.

As cars become more like big computers, it sometimes makes it difficult to perform these “simple” routine check-ups. Rafferty is here to help with all our spring car maintenance services.
